# Farm Soil Maps

> Read soil type, class, and capability maps for a farm's fields.

The **Soil** tab maps the soil under a farm's fields and lists what's in it. Open it from the farm page, or from an individual field to see that field on its own.

  Soil maps are generated from a farm's fields, not its parcels. A farm with no fields, or whose fields have no productive acres, will prompt you to add them first.

## Map views

Three views sit above the map. Switching views changes both the map coloring and the table below it.

    Individual soil types by code, the default view. The table lists map color, soil code, soil description, percentage of the map, acres, and soil rating, with a total row carrying the farm's overall acreage and rating.

    Soils grouped into classes. The table drops the soil code and description for a single soil class column.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Soil Capabilities">
    USDA soil capability classes. Where the farm has both, a toggle on the map switches between **Non-Irr** and **Irrigated** capability classes.

The **Soil Capabilities** view appears only when capability class data exists for the farm, and **Soil Class** only when class data does.

## Acreage type filter

On farms with more than one field and more than one acreage type, an acreage type filter sits beside the view tabs. Use it to read soil for a subset of the farm — irrigated acres only, for example — rather than the whole property.

## Soil rating

Each soil row carries a soil rating, and the total row gives the rating for the farm as a whole, weighted by each soil's share of the area. On a field page, the total is that field's rating instead.

## Export

**View PDF** renders the current soil map and its table as a PDF. Available to signed-in users with read permission on the farm.

The same map is also available through [Generate Reports](/docs/farms/generate-report), alongside aerial, FEMA, and topography maps.

## Data sources

Soil data comes from the SSURGO database distributed by the U.S. NRCS. Illinois soil data is based on research bulletin 811, published by the University of Illinois NRES.

If no soil data exists for the farm's location, the tab says so rather than showing an empty map.
